Turning Passion into Purpose and Purpose into a Place of Her Own

Some dreams begin with a business plan.
Others begin with passion.
For Jessica Bateman, owner of Holy Hair by Jay in Dothan, Alabama, her dream started long before she ever stepped behind a salon chair. From a young age, she knew cosmetology wasn’t simply something she wanted to do; it was what she was meant to do.
Although family encouraged her to pursue a science degree, Jessica never lost sight of the career that inspired her. After earning her degree, she followed her heart and enrolled in cosmetology school, determined to build a future doing what she loved most.
That decision would become the foundation of a journey defined by perseverance, continuous learning, and unwavering commitment.
Today, after more than a decade in the beauty industry, Jessica has reached a milestone that represents years of dedication: opening her own salon space for Holy Hair by Jay.
Building More Than a Client List
Jessica officially began her professional hairstyling career in 2016. For nearly nine years, she operated as an independent booth and suite renter, steadily building a loyal clientele throughout the Dothan area.
Success didn’t happen overnight.
Behind every appointment was someone managing inventory, scheduling clients, balancing finances, marketing services, maintaining sanitation standards, and making every business decision herself. Long before becoming a salon owner, Jessica had already been operating like one.

Along the way, she continued investing in herself.
She earned her Associate of Science degree, became a licensed Alabama cosmetologist, achieved Bellami Extension Certification, and expanded her expertise to include hair coloring, precision cuts, extensions, keratin and Brazilian smoothing treatments, perms, and special event styling.
She even stepped outside the beauty industry to own and operate a Nutrition Club business, strengthening her entrepreneurial skills in customer service, operations, branding, and business management.
Every experience prepared her for the next chapter.
When Preparation Meets Opportunity

Like many entrepreneurs, Jessica knew exactly what she wanted. She simply needed the resources to get there.
Opening a salon requires more than talent. It requires equipment, capital, and the confidence to make a significant investment in your future.
That’s where Renaissance Community Loan Fund (RCLF) became part of Jessica’s story.
Through an SBA Microloan, RCLF provided financing to help Jessica purchase the equipment needed to establish her own salon space turning years of planning and preparation into reality.
At RCLF, we know that access to capital can be the bridge between an idea and a thriving business. Jessica’s journey is a reminder that sometimes entrepreneurs don’t need someone to build the dream for them; they simply need a partner who believes in it.
A Vision Bigger Than Hair
For Jessica, Holy Hair by Jay represents much more than a salon.
It represents a place where people feel welcomed, valued, and confident the moment they walk through the door.
Her vision combines luxury with authenticity, creativity with professionalism, and exceptional customer service with genuine relationships.
But Jessica’s dream doesn’t stop with serving clients.
She hopes to create opportunities for future cosmetologists by building a positive environment where aspiring professionals can learn, develop their skills, and grow successful careers of their own.
Just as mentors invested in her, Jessica wants Holy Hair by Jay to become a place where the next generation of beauty professionals can flourish.
That’s the kind of impact that reaches far beyond four walls.
Investing in Entrepreneurs. Strengthening Communities.
Jessica’s story is one that many aspiring entrepreneurs can relate to.
