More Than a Loan: Building a Stronger Future for Mississippi Childcare
GULFPORT, Miss. — At Renaissance Community Loan Fund (RCLF), community development goes beyond financing. As a nonprofit lender and community development financial institution, RCLF is committed to serving as an advocate, connector, and champion for the communities it serves. Sometimes that means providing capital to help a business grow. Other times, it means bringing people together to address challenges that no single business can solve alone.
On January 14, 2026, RCLF facilitated a virtual roundtable discussion that brought together childcare leaders from across Mississippi to share experiences, discuss industry challenges, and identify opportunities to strengthen one of the state’s most essential economic sectors.
The discussion was led by RCLF client Carmen Walsh Sykes, owner of Little People Big Dreams, LLC and McComb Learning Center in McComb, Mississippi. Drawing from her own experience as a childcare entrepreneur, Sykes shared insights and encouraged dialogue among fellow childcare providers representing communities including Wiggins, Shannon, Tupelo, Starkville, Hattiesburg, Okolona, Calhoun City, and beyond.

Participants discussed several pressing issues affecting childcare providers statewide, including uncertainty surrounding Mississippi’s Child Care Payment Program (CCPP), employer tax incentives that support childcare expenses, ongoing advocacy efforts to restore childcare voucher funding, and collaborative marketing strategies designed to increase awareness of quality childcare services.
The concerns shared during the discussion reflect a growing challenge facing both childcare providers and working families throughout Mississippi. The expiration of temporary federal COVID-19 relief funding, coupled with reductions in state funding allocations, has placed significant strain on the childcare assistance system. As funding levels fluctuate, thousands of families remain on waiting lists for childcare support while providers work to maintain quality services amid ongoing uncertainty.
“Childcare is not a luxury. It is essential infrastructure,” said Jeremy Martin, Community Outreach, Education & Counseling Manager at RCLF. “When parents have access to reliable childcare, they can work, pursue education, and contribute to their local economies. When childcare providers struggle, entire communities feel the impact.”
Recognizing the critical role childcare plays in economic development, RCLF continues to invest in the sector. To date, the organization has supported 15 childcare facilities through 25 loans totaling more than $3.7 million, helping create or retain 242 jobs across Mississippi while expanding access to quality early childhood education and care.
RCLF’s support extends beyond financing. Through its Business Coaching program, the organization provides coaching, technical assistance, and business resources to childcare operators throughout the state including many who do not have loans with RCLF.
“Our mission is bigger than lending,” said Martin. “Every successful childcare center strengthens families, supports employers, and contributes to healthier local economies. By providing coaching and business support, we’re helping these providers build sustainable operations and position themselves for long-term success.”
The January roundtable reinforced RCLF’s belief that meaningful solutions emerge when people come together. While participants represented different communities, experiences, and business models, they shared a common commitment to ensuring Mississippi families have access to safe, reliable, and high-quality childcare.
As the conversation concluded, one message stood out clearly: childcare providers are doing far more than operating businesses. They are creating opportunities for working parents, preparing children for future success, and serving as economic anchors within their communities.
RCLF remains committed to standing alongside these providers as advocates, lenders, coaches, and community partners.
The future of Mississippi depends on strong families, thriving businesses, and healthy communities, and childcare sits at the center of all three. By continuing to invest in childcare providers and amplify their voices, RCLF is helping build a stronger future for communities across the state.
Because when childcare succeeds, communities succeed.
