A Journey Fueled by Determination
For John Wilson, the road to entrepreneurship wasn’t just a career shift; it was a complete reinvention.
After spending 12 years as a journeyman ironworker with Local #92 in Birmingham, a serious on-the-job injury changed everything. Following 10 surgeries, John made a powerful decision: to rebuild his future from the ground up.
He enrolled at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, Florida, completing a rigorous year-long program in just nine months. His commitment and work ethic set him apart graduating as Top Tech (valedictorian) with multiple certifications and awards.
That drive carried him straight into the industry. John secured a position at Rider’s Harley-Davidson in Trussville, Alabama achieving Master Technician status in just two years, a milestone that typically takes five to ten.
Seeing the Gap and Seizing the Opportunity
While working as a Master Technician at Rider’s Harley-Davidson, John found himself making a lengthy daily commute while continuing to dream about business ownership. He knew he had the skills, experience, and vision to build something of his own closer to home. What began as a desire to shorten his commute quickly evolved into a larger mission: creating a state-of-the-art motorcycle service center that would fill a critical need in rural Alabama.
John recognized something others overlooked: a major service gap.
Within a 50-mile radius of Oakman, there are virtually no motorcycle repair options aside from one aging competitor. At the same time, the motorcycle service and parts industry continue to grow, projected to expand from $7 billion in 2025 to $9.3 billion by 2032, driven by:
- Increased demand for preventive maintenance
- Growing use of advanced diagnostics and digital tools
- Rising interest in customization and performance upgrades
- Emerging (but still limited) electric motorcycle servicing needs
John saw not just a business opportunity, but a way to serve a community with convenience, expertise, and reliability.
Building a Vision—One Tier at a Time
With a clear plan and unmatched technical expertise, John is launching Wilson’s Cycle Service as a one-technician shop with a bold vision for growth over the next 5–7 years:
🔧 Tier 1: Main Service Shop
- Capacity for 4–6 technicians
- Full-service repairs and maintenance
- Service advisor and parts support
🏍️ Tier 2: Specialty Custom Shop
- Engine builds, audio upgrades, and custom work
- 2–4 specialized technicians
⚙️ Tier 3: Performance Dyno Shop
- State-of-the-art Dynojet dynamometer
- Dedicated performance tuning technician
- One of only a handful of facilities like it in Alabama
Starting with Harley-Davidson service, John plans to expand into multi-brand servicing, building a highly skilled, cross-trained team to maximize efficiency and meet growing demand.
The Power of Partnership
Turning this vision into reality requires more than determination, it required the right partner.
Through extensive research, John discovered Renaissance Community Loan Fund and recognized it as the right partner to help bring his vision to life. With support from RCLF and funding through the Federal Home Loan Bank Small Business Boost (FHLB SBB) program, he secured the capital needed to purchase the tools, equipment, and resources necessary to launch Wilson’s Cycle Service.
“RCLF allows you to obtain what you need to get started in your own business without fronting all the money upfront,” said Wilson. “The financing allowed me to spread my expenses out over time and get the equipment I needed to open my doors.”
At RCLF, we believe that access to capital, combined with guidance and support, creates opportunity. This partnership is a powerful example of how mission-driven lending can help entrepreneurs move from vision to reality, especially in underserved communities.

Turning Experience into Opportunity
Launching a business is never easy, but John believes preparation, persistence, and the right support system can make all the difference.
The funding provided through RCLF and FHLB SBB not only supplied the resources needed to get started but also gave John the confidence to move forward with a long-term growth strategy. From day one, Wilson’s Cycle Service is positioned to serve a market with limited-service options while building a foundation for future expansion, job creation, and specialized motorcycle performance services.
Driving Impact in Rural Alabama
Wilson’s Cycle Service is more than a repair shop; it’s an investment in the local economy.

With a strategic location advantage and a commitment to excellence, Wilson’s Cycle Service is positioned to become a regional leader in motorcycle service and performance.
Looking Ahead
John Wilson understands firsthand that building a business requires hard work, sacrifice, and patience.
“It’s not an easy process to start your own business,” he said, “but hopefully it will be worth it in the end.”
With his expertise, determination, and a strategic partnership between RCLF and FHLB SBB, Wilson’s Cycle Service is well-positioned to become a premier motorcycle service destination in Alabama creating opportunities for growth while serving riders across the region.
